Dremel sanding accessories include sanding drums, bands, discs, wheels, abrasive brushes and buffs and are reprsented by the Dremel color code purple. Sanding bands fit on the appropriately sized sanding drum. They are ideal for shaping wooden pieces and smoothing surfaces. Sanding discs are available in finer grits than the sanding drums and are used for fine detail sanding. Flapwheels work on both flat and contoured surfaces; and finishing abrasive buffs and brushes are ideal for cleaning and light sanding.
Mandrels
Before we discuss sanding accessories, let’s take a moment to discuss mandrels. Dremel has two different mandrels for ½-inch sanding bands– the mandrel that is included with the 407 sanding band and the EZ407SA mandrel. Dremel has one mandrel for 1/4-inch sanding bands– the mandrel that is included with the 430 sanding band. The 430 and 407 mandrels require a screwdriver to tighten the screw that secures the sanding band to the mandrel. The EZ407SA mandrel uses a tool-free mechanism to secure the sanding band to the mandrel. Finishing abrasive buffs and detail abrasive brushes may be used with the EZ402 EZ Lock mandrel or standard 402 mandrel.
Sanding drums and bands
Common uses for sanding bands include smoothing and shaping wood or removing paint. The sanding drum can be thought of as the mandrel that holds the replaceable sanding bands. There are two sizes of sanding drums: the 407 and 430 drums use a screw to release and tighten the sanding band and the EZ407 drum uses a tool-free method to release and tighten the sanding band. The sanding bands that fit the ½” 407 drum, ¼” 430 drum and the ½” EZ407 drum are available in 60, 120 and 240 grits.

Max Life Carbide Sanding Drum
The Dremel Max Life 408HP 60 Grit Carbide Sanding Drum has a carbide coating that provides added durability to the surface of the drum and will not tear loose like other ordinary sanding bands. It features a 30X longer life compared to the Dremel 408 sanding band. It’s ideal for a variety of materials including ceramic wall tile, hard & soft woods, pet nails, composites, fiberglass, MDF boards, rigid foam, gourds and more. Includes one 1/2 In. (12.7mm) coarse 60 grit carbide coated sanding drum.

Sanding Discs
Sanding discs have a finer grit than sanding bands and provide a flexible surface that allows sanding in contoured and hard to reach areas. There are two styles of sanding discs: those that fit the 402 mandrel and those that fit the EZ402 mandrel. The discs that fit the 402 mandrel have a ¾” diameter and are available in 180, 220 and 240 grits. The discs that fit the EZ402 mandrel have a 1-1/4” diameter and are available in 60, 120 and 240 grits. Sanding discs work well on wood and fiberglass materials.

Flapwheels
These versatile flapwheels work on flat and contoured surfaces. Once you’ve got the rough stuff off of the picture frame or chair, take another pass with a flapwheel to finish up the surface before repainting for your next demonstration. Flapwheels also work beautifully for removing paint off old windows and rust off of garden tools. Each flapwheel includes its own mandrel.

Finishing Abrasive Buffs
Ideal for cleaning, light sanding, and finishing, Dremel abrasive buffs come two to a package. Applications for this accessory include light sanding on shaped wood spindles, chair rungs and balusters. Also good for paint removal on delicate materials. The 512 very fine-grit buff is particularly ideal for removing tarnish from brass. All may be used on metal, glass, wood, aluminum, and plastics. 511E includes a 180 and 280 grit buff. 512E is a 320 grit buff.
Finishing abrasive buffs may be used with the EZ402 EZ Lock Mandrel or Standard 402 Mandrel.

Max Life Finishing Abrasive Buffs
The Max Life Finishing Abrasive buffs offer at least 4X longer life compared to the Dremel 511E finishing buff. Its longer life achieved by adding 100% more of the same, durable abrasive material used on the 511E abrasive buffs. The buff is great for detail cleaning and light sanding, as well as paint removal on delicate materials and is Ideal for use on wood, plastic, glass, and metals such as steel and aluminum. Compatible with both EZ402 EZ Lock mandrel and standard 402 mandrel.

Detail Abrasive Brushes
Great for detail cleaning and light sanding and allows sanding of contours, details, and hard-to-reach areas. The rubber bristles have abrasive inside, so there is no need for polishing compound. Detail abrasive brushes remove the exterior surface layer without damage to base layer below and removes the paint but not the wood with light pressure. Use on metal, wood, glass, aluminum and plastics. EZ471SA is 36 grit. EZ472SA is 120 grit. EZ473SA is 220 grit. For use with the EZ402 EZ Lock Mandrel or Standard 402 Mandrel.
