Router bits are used for edging and grooving wood, and making things like letter signs and picture frames. Since Dremel router bits of made of high speed steel, they are designed to work primarily on wood, but can also work on solid materials that are softer than wood such as plastic and hard foam. They are not for use on metal or laminate. All of the router bits available from Dremel have a 1/8” shank. Because of their aggressive nature, router bits should always be used with the Dremel plunge router attachment or shaper/router table.
Piloted bits
Note: Piloted routing bits are designed to work on the edge of the wood and not down the center of the wood. Dremel piloted bits are the 612, 615 and 618.
Straight bits
Straight, and V-groove bits work well for routing down the center or interior of a piece of wood. Dremel straight bits are the 650, 652, and 654.
Project: You can create a picture frame by using a plain piece of wood and adding a decorative edge with a 612, 615, or 618 router bit. Using a straight bit like 650, 652, or 654, you can rout-out the center of the wood to create the picture area of the frame.
